Hanging in there

Over three years ago on this blog I mentioned my side was hurting after long runs. It was around this same time that I realized that ever so slowly, it was getting harder and harder to run. I have tried many times push back at what my body was telling me, thinking that maybe it was all in my head. I even went to the Dr multiple time, and though some tests were wacky, I never got an answer. Progressively though, I have felt my body winding down.where once I could run a marathon, I now experience extreme fatigue if I run more than a few times in a week.and soon, I think I may finally get an answer.

Run fatboy run

The first few weeks of running after taking a break for awhile can sure be humiliating. Here I am, huffing and puffing along and I pass old ladies with walkers, and I am moving slowly enough that we can have a short conversation.

Now, I don’t really think I’m fat… but I am certainly not in shape right now. A few months ago there was a sports talk radio guy in Portland complaining about all the fat people running. “You are not fooling anyone!” he said, and indicated that only people that are in shape should be running. Let me get this right… the people who really don’t need to run… are the ones that should run?

It is the mentality of some of the meat market gyms I suppose… that exercising is just a way to show off your goods. I have at times pondered why some people I see at the gym are even there… 90 pounds and not a once of fat… bouncing up and down on the dreadmill like they are on the moon and gravity does not apply to them. Two miles like that burns what… 5 calories? I just want to tell then to go home and eat something. Of course, that would be just as hypocritical as saying fat people shouldn’t run.

It is... time

Time to start running again.
